The 'install vmware tools' is grayed out in windows 8.1 guest, Linux host vmware workstation 12. I tried the suggestion in this link with no success I have tried starting windows with cd/dvd not connected (this results in an empty cd/dvd drive showing under my devices in the windows 8.1 guest but 'install vmware tools' still grayed out). VMware tools requires the guest to have a CD drive. In my case the physical host doesn’t have a CD drive, and I had no need to mount any CDs in the guest, so while creating the guest I removed the CD drive. No CD drive = no place for VMware to insert the CD. But rather than complain about it, it simply grays out the option.
Guest operating system Windows 2000 and earlier, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, and later support VMware Tools.
For Windows 2000 and later, VMware Tools installs a virtual machine upgrade helper tool. This tool restores the network configuration if you upgrade the virtual machine compatibility from ESX/ESXi 3.5 to ESX/ESXi 4.0 and later or from Workstation 5.5 to Workstation 6.0 and later.
- Power on the virtual machine.
- Verify that the guest operating system is running.
- If you connected the virtual machine’s virtual CD/DVD drive to an ISO image file when you installed the operating system, change the setting so that the virtual CD/DVD drive is configured to autodetect a physical drive.
The autodetect setting enables the virtual machine's first virtual CD/DVD drive to detect and connect to the VMware Tools ISO file for a VMware Tools installation. This ISO file is detected as a physical CD by your guest operating system. Use the virtual machine settings editor to set the CD/DVD drive to autodetect a physical drive.
- Log in as an administrator unless you are using an older Windows operating system. Any user can install VMware Tools in a Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows ME guest operating system. For operating systems later than these, you must log in as an administrator.
- The AppDefense component is not installed by default. You must perform a custom installation and include that component.
Procedure
- On the host, from the Workstation Pro menu bar, select VM > Install VMware Tools. If an earlier version of VMware Tools is installed, the menu item is Update VMware Tools.
- If you are installing VMware Tools for the first time, click OK on the Install VMware Tools information page. If autorun is enabled for the CD-ROM drive on the guest operating system, the VMware Tools installation wizard starts. If autorun is not enabled, to manually launch the wizard, click Start > Run and enter D:setup.exe, where D: is your first virtual CD-ROM drive. Use D:setup64.exe for 64-bit Windows guest operating system.
- Follow the on-screen prompts.
- If the New Hardware wizard appears, follow the prompts and accept the defaults. Note: If you are installing a beta or RC version of VMware Tools and you see a warning that a package or driver is not signed, click Install Anyway to complete the installation.
- When prompted, reboot the virtual machine.

I’m running VMware Workstation 15 (Version: 15.5.2 build-15785246) to host Ubuntu Linux from a Windows 10 machine. I need to share a folder between Windows and Ubuntu. I created a folder in Windows and in the Virtual Machine Settings > Options > Shared Folders it says “enabled” and my Windows folder is listed. This looked like it was going to be easy.

Following directions from a website (https://theholmesoffice.com/how-to-share-folders-between-windows-and-ubuntu-using-vmware-player/ ) I entered this command in Linux: vmware-hgfsclient, but it didn’t list my shared drive.
The next step was to enter this command: sudo vmware-config-tools.pl, but this produced an error that the command wasn’t found.
The assumption was that VMware Tools isn’t installed. Following other web searches, in the VMware Workstation startup dialog I selected my virtual machine instance, then Player > Manage, but “Install VMware Tools…” is grayed out. This seems to confirm that VMware Tools isn’t installed, but it gives me no options to do so.
I have spent hours going round-and-round the web looking for a solution. Every set of instructions from VMware says to simply select VM > Install VMware Tools when the guest OS starts (VMware Tools for Windows Guests). But I cannot find this option and it doesn’t appear to apply to me.
Install Vmware Tools Greyed Out Esxi
I have downloaded VMware Tools (ISO) but I have no idea how to install it. Every guide I’ve found says to click on “Install VMware Tools” but all I see is “Reinstall VMware Tools” but it is grayed out. Very frustrating.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
